Message from the Principal

Joshua Snook
As Principal, it is a pleasure to welcome you to Winona Elementary and Intermediate School!

Our Pre Kindergarten through Fifth Grade campus provides a safe, nurturing, and child centered environment in which our children can grow academically, socially and emotionally. We encourage our children to learn, celebrating their creativity, initiative and individuality, through their daily interactions in the classroom, as well as, through their participation in many supplemental and enriching programs. The faculty and staff at Winona Elementary strive to treat students as individuals, providing personalized attention and encouraging each child to reach his/her full potential.

Our curriculum is rich and diverse. The centerpiece of our elementary school program is our language arts curriculum, incorporating best practice as based on current literacy research. Reading instruction, which includes guided reading groups, literature circles, and Accelerated Reading which uses a variety of quality children's literature, both fiction and nonfiction. Phonological strategies as well as vocabulary study are employed to develop and expand reading ability. Students write on a daily basis, with an emphasis on expository writing. Literature is often used to introduce lessons in math, science, and social studies. The use of Smart Boards and other technology will help our teachers integrate and connect subject areas whenever possible, demonstrating to students that the world is complex, diverse, and intertwined. Our professional staff collaborates regularly to update the curriculum and design activities that promote differentiation of instruction. Our students are also exposed to a variety of special areas including music, library/media studies, and physical education.

The faculty and staff at Winona are proud of our school. We strive for academic excellence while focusing on each child's social and emotional development. Our students are significant contributors to the operations of our school as they help set goals, rules, and expectations. The classrooms in our school are safe, creative, and engaging places where students feel empowered to take risks and make choices.

Our parents/guardians and volunteers, through their continued involvement, help provide the support and interaction that contributes to a wonderful partnership between home and school, benefiting the children at Winona I.S.D. Community support provides access to additional activities, events and resources that augment our educational focus. Your partnership is essential to your child's academic success and we look forward to working closely with you throughout the school year. We invite you to stay in close communication with your child's teacher(s). The weekly Monday Folder will contain school-wide information as well as individual classroom and grade level team information.

Safety and security for all students is a top priority. We ask that all parents and visitors stop in the front office to check in with our office staff as soon as you arrive to Winona Elementary. In order to ensure student safety, it is critical that we know who is in our school building during every minute of each school day. If someone other than yourself, a sibling or a person listed on your child's Emergency Care Card, will be picking your child up from school, you must notify us ahead of time so that we can help you plan.

When you walk through the doors of Winona Elementary School you feel the closeness and camaraderie that embraces all who visit and are welcomed warmly. We hope you get a chance to visit our school to see for yourself its magic and charm.

Sincerely,

Joshua Snook
