Registration and Enrollment


A student who is new to Winona ISD or who did not complete the prior school year in a WISD school must complete the registration process.


Who is Eligible To Enroll?

Age: As of September 1st of the current school year the student must be:

  • Age 3 or 4 to enter pre-kindergarten (additional qualifications necessary)
  • Age 5 to enter kindergarten
  • Age 6 to enter 1st grade (unless kindergarten was completed in another public school)
  • Less than age 22 and not previously graduated from high school

 

Residency: The student must live in the District with a parent or legal guardian.

 

What Is Needed To Register?

Parent/legal guardian must accompany the student (if under age 18)

An official city, county, or state birth certificate

Social Security card

Certified immunization record

Student's last report card

Unofficial transcript from previous school

Proof of residence (current utility bill preferred)

Proof of income for pre-school qualification

 

Immunization Requirements

An immunization record, certified by a physician or other public health personnel is required by the Texas Department of Health for enrollment.

Dress and Grooming

WISD takes pride in the appearance of the students. A student's dress reflects the quality of the school he/she attends as well as the conduct and academic work of the students. The district's dress code is established to teach hygiene, instill discipline, prevent disruptions, and avoid safety hazards. Students shall come to school looking clean and neat and wearing clothing and exhibiting grooming that will not be a health or safety hazard to the student or others.

1. Skirts, dresses, shorts and similar attire must be no more than four inches above the kneecap.

2. Garments such as biking shorts, running shorts, leotards worn as pants or clothing designed to be worn as underclothing are not allowed.

3. Baggy or oversized pants/shorts will not be worn. All pants/shorts are expected to be worn at the waist.

4. All tops, shirts and dressed must have a shoulder strap that is three inches or greater in width. Oversized or over cut armholes will not be allowed. Boys' shirts must have a sleeve.

5. Revealing clothing of any type (see-through, low cut, etc.) will not be allowed. Undergarments will not be exposed at any time.

6. Bare midriff tops are not allowed (midriff must be covered, even when arms are raised).

7. Articles of clothing should be worn as they are designed to be worn, such as suspenders on shoulders and trousers full length.

8. Females may wear earrings only as ear attire. Earrings will not be permitted for male students. No visible body piercing will be allowed - this includes tongue piercing!

9. Hair is to be neat, clean, and well groomed.

a) Male students' hair should not fall below the top of a traditional collar, below the student's ear lobe or eyes. No ponytails or braids will be worn. Corn roll braids will be accepted. Afros must be shaped.

b) All students will refrain from any coloring of the hair that does not conform with natural hair color (i.e. purple, green, blue, pink, etc.)

c) No "tails", sculptured and/or design cut hairstyles are permitted.

10. Facial hair such as beards and goatees or mustaches will not be permitted. Males must be clean-shaven every day. Side burns may not extend below the bottom of the student's ear lobe.

11. Students may not bring on campus or wear any type of hats, caps, sunglasses, headbands or headgear.

a) No bandannas will be worn at any time.

b) Hoods on hooded jackets must be removed when entering the building.

12. Clothing with obscene language, lewd, suggestive, or otherwise inappropriate design will not be acceptable. Any attire advertising tobacco, drugs or alcohol is expressly prohibited.

13. No wallet chains are permitted.

14. Shoes/sandals must be worn at all times. Athletic/tennis shoes must be worn during PE/athletics. Sandals/flip flops will not be allowed during PE or athletic activities.

 

The examples and guidelines listed above may not cover every possible instance of appropriate or inappropriate grooming or appearance. The interpretative authority as to what dress or grooming is indecent, disruptive, a hindrance to best learning situations, or a detriment to best discipline shall be vested in the principal or any other administrative authority in the school system. When a student is guilty of a grooming violation, he/she will be asked to correct it. Dress code violations may have a consequence of detention hall or SAC. If necessary, parents will be asked to take appropriate action to ensure compliance.
