What is SHAC?
A district-level advisory council that “assists the district in ensuring that local community values are reflected in the district’s health education instruction.” -Texas Education Code, Title 2, Chapter 28, §28.004
Mandated by State Law
A voice for parents and the community
A way to share the importance of health to the WISD Board
SHAC provides a yearly report to the School Board

What does a SHAC Do?
Reviews all health related curriculum
Makes recommendations on health related topics
Develop/Monitor the district's Local
School Wellness Policy
Identify gaps in district health policies,
programs and practices
Advocate for school health within the district and the community
Amplify the voices of community
members and parents/caregivers
Develop a vision, goals and plan for
supporting the Whole Child, Whole Scool, Whole community model

Why a SHAC is important?
Healthy children learn better!
Our whole child, whole community & whole health model is important in learning success and creating lifelong healthy habits.
1 in 3 U.S. children are overweight or obese.
Physical activity is positively associated with students' cognitive functioning. Which includes ability to pay attention, memory and IQ test scores.
Eating school breakfast positively affects the student attendance.
High quality diets improve cognition and test scores.
Participation in PE class is associated with better grades, test scores and classroom behavior.
WHO are members?
Members of the SHAC come from different areas of the community and from within the school district. The majority of members must be parents who are not employed by the district. Texas law (Texas Education Code, Title 2, Subtitle F, Chapter 28, Subchapter A, §28.004) requires the establishment of a SHAC for every school district. Some examples of members include:
